Title
One, Two, Three Quiet

Problem Scenario

Broad Question

How do boys and girls minds work differently?

Specific Question

If I put about ten boys and girls in a room for ten minutes and said that if they didn't talk for the ten minutes they will get a reward, will more boys or girls talk?

Hypothesis

I think that about eighty percent of the boys will talk, and I think that barely any girls will talk, like maybe twenty percent.

Variables

Independent Variable:

amount of talking

Dependent Variable:

gender

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

type of people
amount of each gender
whether the people know each other or not
type of reward

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

none

General Plan

My general plan is to put five boys and five girls in a room together alone for ten minutes, record them, and tell them that if they don't talk for the ten minutes, then they'll get a reward. I'm thinking that I'll use the same ten people, for like, one trials, and the reward will be two hershey kisses.
Potential Problems And Solutions
When I tell people the reward is two hershey kisses, all just may talk because they don't care if they get or don't get two little pieces of chocolate, but I don't think that'll happen.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

One of the kids might be allergic to chocolate, so I'll have to ask all the people I need, and then I'll ask them if they're allergic to any kind of food, and if they were allergic to something that I was going to give as a prize, then I would change the prize to something else.

Experimental Design

(add the correct headings from the experimental design page before beginning)

What is your experimental unit?

I will be measuring the amount boys and girls that will talk and not talk during the ten minutes that I'm recording them for.

Number Of Trials:

I will do this experiment once.
Number of Subjects In Each trial:
I will have five boys and five girls in my trial.

Number of Observations:

I will record the five boys and five girls for ten minutes, one time.

When data will be collected:

The data will be collected on Friday, March 22, 2013.
Where will data be collected:
The data will be collected during lunch, at school.

  1. I will find ten volunteers (ten boys and ten girls)
  2. For all the ones that don't talk, I'll give them

Results

My results when I did my experiment were that out of the five girls and five boys, only two people talked. One boy talked, and one girl talked. I also recorded that even though only two out of the ten people talked, there were many, infractions. Almost every single people made one noise at one point. Since it was during lunch, all the subjects were eating, and a few of the boys tried to draw attention to themselves, for example, one boy made a big deal about not being able to open his Sobe life water, and another boy kept dropping his lasagna while he was trying to eat it. Overall, everyone laughed at one point.

Conclusion

My conclusion is that my hypothesis was wrong. I said that eighty percent of the boys would talk, and twenty percent wouldn't talk. What happened when I did my experiment was that eighty percent of the boys didn't talk, and twenty percent of the boys did talk. In my hypothesis about the girls I was right. I said that eighty percent of the girls wouldn't talk, and twenty percent of the girls would talk, and I was right.

Abstract

What I wanted to know is if the bigger percent of boys or girls would talk if put in a room together for ten minutes, and told if they didn't talk for the ten minutes, would get two hershey kisses. What happened when I did my experiment was that the same amount of boys and girls both didn't talk.
